Women Entrepreneurs in the United States
By Susanna Nemes.

The growth of women entrepreneurs in the United States has been tremendous. Today, there are 6.2 million women owned firms, employing 9.2 million people and generating sales of $1.15 trillion.  A subgroup of women that is dominating in the business growth arena is Hispanic women.  Between 1997 and 2006, the number of firms majority owned (51% or more) by Hispanic/Latina women increased by 121 percent. As of 2006, there are an estimated 857,000 firms owned by Hispanic/Latina women in the U.S., generating nearly $46 billion in sales. Latinas and other women are in a unique position to influence the workplace, our country’s business culture, to demonstrate new ways of leadership and to support other women in their career development.

The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is proud to launch our new Women Entrepreneur Committee. The committee will help Latina and other women entrepreneurs to achieve success in their role as business owners, professionals, or government and private employees.

The Maryland Hispanic Chamber’s Women Entrepreneur Committee will provide member with:

    • Opportunities for women to promote their businesses
    • Web presence through our online Members Directory
    • Access to peers
    • Access to mentors
    • Links to useful government and business services
    • Resource list of books
    • Networking opportunities
    • Highlights and articles of important issues for women business owners

Follow this link to access an important article from the Center for Women’s Business Research, which presents a detailed description of businesses owned by Hispanic and Latina Women in the United States in 2006.

As you can see from the article, the power of our fellow Latina women in the business community is impressive.
